Stain Viscosity and Oven Temperature Similar to the sintering furnace temperature, the high temperature of the porcelain furnace and the consistency with which you have mixed your stains can be two of your most useful tools when staining. I then fine-tune the margins with rubber wheels under a microscope and sandblast the crown with 50 micron aluminum oxide at 40 psi. You will see the tooth come to life before your eyes. Then I blend the markings with a green state rubber wheel or point. For this reason, after I redefine the secondary anatomy with a fine diamond, I very slightly mar the focal points of the tooth, such as line angles and cusps, with a certain degree of randomness. Nature doesn’t produce perfectly straight, predictable lines: Milling machines do. From an esthetic perspective, the most important aspects of a natural tooth are the beautiful imperfections and absence of straight lines and angles. Even expensive milling machines are limited by the smallest size bur and angles that make some areas difficult to reach.
Contour and Surface Preparation While we always strive to do the heavy lifting in the digital realm, a truly life-like tooth is only about 85% of where it should be in terms of contour and anatomy after milling. A good place to begin experimentation is by increasing/decreasing your high temperature by 10-15 degrees 3. I recommend experimenting with your firing cycles and creating custom shade tabs with your zirconia for more accurate and predictable results. By adjusting these parameters on the sintering program, it is possible to decrease or increase the value of the zirconia, which in my opinion is the most important factor when trying to match a custom shade on a monolithic crown. Sintering Cycles The time duration and high temperature of the sintering cycle can be an invaluable tool- one that is too often overlooked. Even the most skilled technician will struggle to breathe life into a crown that was milled from an inferior zirconia. For me, that zirconia is ArgenZ HT+, ArgenZ Anterior, and Argen shading liquids.
